Let’s Get to Know Nathan Martin – Part One

Bob Roberts, Jr.

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

We recently discovered Nathan Martin, 4th Ward Councilman in Shelby set up a GoFundMe page for himself. We want to respond to his request as well as other public posts he has made. We will be using Nathans’s own words and actions to show why we believe he is unprincipled and unfit for public office. What follows is our opinion and many facts verifiable from sources provided.

But don’t take our word for anything, please look for yourself. Everything contained within is able to be confirmed via public websites and is freely accessible. We have included links and references for what Nathan doesn’t seem to want us to know. Then, watch what Nathan says and does. Will he will attack us and palter (more on this later) his responses? Will he offer any sources or proof as we have? We doubt you will see him accept any responsibility for his own decisions, behavior and actions if his past is any clue.

Before we start, some understanding is in order. Nathan is a public figure, and accordingly, the following is from Ohio Bar Association:

  • The law has been crafted to provide greater freedom for individuals to comment on and criticize those people in the public eye

  • Such people are classified as "public figures" and they are not given as much protection from defamation as are private citizens

  • Unless public figures are able to prove that … acted with "actual malice”—knowingly printing false information, or acting recklessly as to whether it was false or not, public figures cannot recover damages for defamation

  • Under the Ohio Constitution, you are free to voice your opinions about any of these (government) matters

Now, let’s look at Nathan’s Twitter account since this appears to be his preferred method of communication.

Joining in June, 2007, Nathan has sent at least 19,700 tweets. The banner on his Twitter home page says, “Councilman Nathan Martin” with a photograph used in a recent election campaign. Nathan states he is a, “conservative from N Central Ohio, City councilman in #Shelby, Iraq Veteran, husband, and dad. ‘IDGAF because Twitter’s not a real place.’ Dave Chappelle”

As shown on his Twitter account, Nathan’s apparent priorities are these:

  1. Conservative from N Central Ohio

  2. City councilman in #Shelby

  3. Iraq Veteran

  4. Husband

  5. Dad

Nathan seemingly doesn’t respect or appreciate respectful, reasoned or educated dialog because he quotes Dave Chappelle, by saying, “I don’t give a F*** because Twitter’s not a real place” (IDGAF).

For someone who thinks Twitter isn’t a real place, Nathan spends an awful lot of time there.

Here’s a screenshot of Nathan’s Twitter home page, retrieved December 9, 2021:

A review of Nathan’s seemingly “official” Twitter account show no (zero) tweets about the 4th Ward of Shelby or even the City of Shelby as a whole. He doesn’t even mention his employer, Demme Learning. He lists his “official” title (Councilman Nathan Martin), lists he is a city councilman for Shelby and has an “official” campaign website on which he begs (to ask for as a charity – Merriam-Webster) for money listed as well.

The link on his Twitter page, VoteNathanMartin.com links to a “Nathan Martin for State Representative” campaign site, an election he lost in a landslide 69.5% to 30.5% in the Republican Primary for U.S. House of Representatives, District 2 on April 28, 2020. Campaign finance records (www.transparencyusa.org) for the second quarter of 2020 reporting period for this election shows Nathan and/or his PAC reported the following:

  • Contributions: $10,556.00

  • Expenditures: $11,452.00

  • Over Spent: $896.00

As a self-described “conservative” it seems, according to these official records (www.transparencyusa.org), Nathan overspent his campaign contributions by $896.00. As part of the expenditures, he paid his own firm, Cincinnatus Consulting $464.23. More on Cincinnatus Consulting later.

Here is Nathan’s “Statement” on his Twitter site about his subpoena regarding the January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol Attack and his reason for setting up his own GoFundMe page:

Nathan is justifiably proud to be an armed services Veteran. Yet, despite his Enlistment Oath, he dishonors the very Constitution he swore (or affirmed) to support and defend. Is the irony lost on him that he announced on his Twitter page (where his first descriptor is “conservative”) that he set up a GoFundMe page begging for money he didn’t earn? This announcement was made on December 7, 2021 – Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. How shameful – to use this day of remembrance to solicit money because he thinks he is somehow a victim of his very own decisions, actions and behavior.

Nathan seeks honor for himself by posting he is an Iraq Veteran on his social media accounts and when running of elected office, yet doesn’t give honor to those who actually deserve it on a day commemorating their sacrifice. Look at Nathan’s Twitter account – he posted NOTHING related to Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. But he can beg for money he didn’t earn on that day. More about his GoFundMe page later.
